The Jeep Grand Cherokee has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The XC40 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Grand Cherokee Overland/Summit helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The XC40 doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s optional 360-degree camera offers optional integrated front and rear camera washers, ensuring clear, all-weather visibility without the need for manual cleaning. In contrast, the Volvo XC40 lacks camera washers, requiring you to manually clean the cameras for optimal performance.

Both the Grand Cherokee and the XC40 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive, around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is safer than the Volvo XC40:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is safer than the Volvo XC40:

Side impacts caused 23% of all road fatalities in 2018, down from 29% in 2003, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety introduced its side barrier test. In order to continue improving vehicle safety, the IIHS has started using a more severe side impact test: 37 MPH (up from 31 MPH), with a 4180-pound barrier (up from 3300 pounds). The results of this newly developed test demonstrates that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is safer than the XC40:

Warranty

Jeep’s powertrain warranty covers the Grand Cherokee 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the XC40. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the XC40 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 8 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Cherokee’s warranty.

Reliability

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Grand Cherokee has a standard 850-amp battery (900 Overland/Summit). The XC40’s 760-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. With 42 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Jeep higher than Volvo.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are more reliable than Volvo With 55 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Jeep higher than Volvo.

Engine

The Grand Cherokee’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 46 more horsepower (293 vs. 247) and 2 lbs.-ft. more torque (260 vs. 258) than the XC40’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 128 more horsepower (375 vs. 247) and 212 lbs.-ft. more torque (470 vs. 258) than the XC40’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Grand Cherokee 4xe 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid is faster than the Volvo XC40:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Grand Cherokee 4xe running on electricity gets better mileage than the XC40 T5 (57 city/56 hwy MPGe vs. 23 city/30 hwy).

The Grand Cherokee 4xe can travel with zero emissions for 26 miles. The XC40 can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Grand Cherokee uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended on Grand Cherokee 4xe for maximum performance). The XC40 requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s standard fuel tank has 4.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the XC40 (19 vs. 14.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Grand Cherokee’s standard fuel tank has 8.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the XC40 (23 vs. 14.2 gallons).

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Jeep Grand Cherokee higher (6 out of 10) than the Volvo XC40 (4). This means the Grand Cherokee produces up to 12.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the XC40 every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Grand Cherokee’s brake rotors are larger than those on the XC40:

The Grand Cherokee’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the XC40 are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Grand Cherokee has larger standard tires than the XC40 (245/70R17 vs. 235/55R18). The Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the XC40 (275/45R21 vs. 245/45R20).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve has standard 21-inch wheels. The XC40’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Grand Cherokee has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The XC40 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Grand Cherokee offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the XC40; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling

The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The XC40 doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The Grand Cherokee offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The XC40’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Grand Cherokee offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Grand Cherokee’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The XC40 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Grand Cherokee’s wheelbase is 10.3 inches longer than on the XC40 (116.7 inches vs. 106.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Grand Cherokee is 2.4 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than on the XC40.

The Grand Cherokee’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52% to 48%) than the XC40’s (57.9% to 42.1%). This gives the Grand Cherokee more stable handling and braking.

The Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the XC40 B5 Plus (27.7 seconds @ .6 average G’s vs. 28.1 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Grand Cherokee has a greater minimum ground clearance than the XC40 (8.4 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Grand Cherokee to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Air Suspension’s minimum ground clearance is 2.8 inches higher than on the XC40 (10.9 vs. 8.1 inches).

Chassis

The front grille of the Grand Cherokee uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The XC40 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Grand Cherokee offers available computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The XC40 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Grand Cherokee has 9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XC40 (107 vs. 98).

The Grand Cherokee has .9 inches more front headroom, .4 inches more front legroom, 2.7 inches more front hip room, 2.5 inches more front shoulder room, .3 inches more rear headroom, 2.1 inches more rear legroom, 1.7 inches more rear hip room and 1.7 inches more rear shoulder room than the XC40.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Grand Cherokee’s rear seats recline. The XC40’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Grand Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the XC40 with its rear seat up (37.7 vs. 20.4 cubic feet). The Grand Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the XC40 with its rear seat folded (70.8 vs. 57.5 cubic feet).

Payload and Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Volvo XC40 is limited to 3500 pounds. The Grand Cherokee offers up to a 6200 lbs. towing capacity.

Trailer Sway Control is standard on the Grand Cherokee, using the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. A trailer sway program costs extra on the XC40.

The Grand Cherokee has a much higher standard payload capacity than the XC40 (1240 vs. 925 lbs.).

The Grand Cherokee has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the XC40 (1280 vs. 925 lbs.).

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Grand Cherokee is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the XC40. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the XC40, the Grand Cherokee Overland Luxury Tech/Summit has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster), outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe/Limited/Overland/Summit’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The XC40 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Grand Cherokee’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The XC40 has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

The Grand Cherokee Overland/Summit offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer, certain gauge and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The XC40 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Grand Cherokee’s standard Keyless Enter-N-Go allow you to unlock the doors from either front door handle, unlock the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Keyless Drive standard on the XC40 only offers hands-free access for the ignition, none to unlock the vehicle.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Grand Cherokee has standard extendable sun visors. The XC40 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Grand Cherokee to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The XC40 doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Optional air conditioned front and rear seats keep the Grand Cherokee’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The XC40 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Grand Cherokee Overland Luxury Tech/Summit has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the XC40.

The Grand Cherokee (except Laredo A) offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XC40 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Model Availability

The Grand Cherokee is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The XC40 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
